Virgil James Shew, 90, of Willow Hill, IL., passed away at 12:25 a.m. on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the Skilled Care Unit of Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson, IL.
Born on July 8, 1923 in Bogota, IL., he was the son of Murl Shew and Nellie (Lynch) Shew. Virgil was a lifelong farmer, loved gardening, his church, his friends, pets, and family. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Oblong since 1946 where he served as a deacon for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Jasper County Farm Bureau.
On February 2, 1950, he married Helen (Ping) Shew and she survives. Other survivors include a brother, Gerald Shew of Robinson, IL.; nephews, Dale Shew and Steve Shew; nieces, Betty Lockhart, Donna Jean Ruddell, Janice Catt, and Jennifer Rowe. Virgil also leaves many loved neighbors, friends and special friends, Nick and Angie Lewis and family.
Virgil was preceded in death by his only daughter, Margaret Ann who passed away December 30, 1995; a brother, Clarence Shew; and sisters-in-laws Lois Shew and Janet Shew.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 201 South Garfield, Oblong, IL. Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at the church with Bro Rusty Morecraft officiating. Burial will be in the Mound Cemetery, rural Jasper County.
